Prokofiev, a young music student in St. Petersburg, initially conceived several piano sonatas, which he set aside in manuscript form due to his rapid compositional growth. At 26, he revisited these ideas and crafted Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 28, in 1917. Titled "From Old Notebooks," it draws on themes sketched during his teenage years. Unlike his other sonatas, his third sonata comprises of a single movement, reminiscent of Liszt's approach in his Sonata in B minor. Premiering on April 15, 1918, at a music festival sponsored by the St. Petersburg Conservatory, it earned praise and became a staple in Prokofiev's own recitals.
